Confidentiality Policy

All doctors have an obligation to keep information about patients confidential.

This obligation is governed by the Medical Council's guide to Ethical Conduct and by the Data Protection Act.

What this means for you:

Doctors and other staff will not disclose any information about you to any other person without your permssion.

The duty of confidentiality applies to people of all ages, including children and young people.

There are some exceptions; under the Medical Council's Ethical code, it is acceptable to disclose information if required to protect the welfare of the patient or of other persons, or to protect society.

In addition, it is normal practice to share relevant information with other health professionals involved in care (eg doctors, pharmacists, nurses, social worker). These professionals also have a duty of confidentiality. Information is shared on a need-to-know basis, meaning that only information needed by the other person will be given.

If you have concerns about confidentiality, please discuss them with your doctor or with any staff member.

Special circumstances:

(1) Children / young people.

The same rules apply to young patients; doctors will not give information to anyone (including relatives) without permission, unless you or or someone else is at risk.

(2) People unable to make decisions about consent.

If someone is unable to make decisions, eg because of mental illness or dementia, the doctor will do whatever he or she considers to be in the best interest of that person.
