Teaching and Training

General practice training

This practice is a training practice for doctors training in the speciality of general practice.

Doctors training in Trinity College Dublin/Health Service Executive specialist training programme in general practice work in the practice for 1 year on the 3rd or 4th year of their training programme.

What this means for patients:

Doctors training in the practice are known as registrars. They are at least 3 years post graduation and have wide experience in relevant hospital-based specialities before taking up a position at this practice. Most will have worked in emergency medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and psychiatry posts.

They work in the same way as other doctors in the practice, initially with a smaller caseload. They are supervised at all times by the trainer, Dr. Loughrey, or, in her absence, by an experienced deputy.

As a patient, you can choose which doctor you wish to see, subject to availability of appointments. The exception is emergencies when we cannot always offer a choice.

Dr. Janet Brady, our current registrar, is in her fourth year of training.

Observation / video-recording of consultations.

Occasionally we ask patients' permission to have another doctor observe a consultation or to video-record the consultation. This is a standard method of training, focusing particularly on communication skills. It is, of course, voluntary and you are free to decline.

There are strict guidelines about use of video-recordings. These will be explained to patients before recording takes place.

Undergraduate medical training

This practice is a teaching practice for Trinity College Dublin. Students spend time working in the practice during their 5th year of study.

What this means for patients:

Patients may be invited to see a student with or in addition to seeing a doctor.  This is, of course, voluntary and you are free to decline the invitation.

Real live consultations are a very valuable teaching method for students. We are extremely grateful for our patients' support and input into the training of doctors.
